How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping on People

Lab sitting politely on a leash and offering a pawDogs jump because it works. To stop a dog from jumping on people, ignore the jumping, turn away, and reward your dog the moment all four paws are on the floor. Teach a replacement behavior, like sit, and ask guests to say hello only when your dog is calm.

Why Dogs Jump

Dogs jump to say hello, to get attention, or because they are excited. Puppies jump to reach your face. Pushing the dog away, talking to it, or yelling "Off!" still counts as attention, and any attention feels like a reward to a dog!

How to Stop a Dog From Jumping on People

Training a dog not to jump comes down to two things: don't reward the jumping, and reward the behavior you want instead.

  1. Ignore the jumping. Stand still, fold your arms, and look away. Don't talk, push, or make eye contact.
  2. Reward four paws on the floor. The moment your dog stands or sits, give a small treat and calm praise. Give the treat low, near the floor.
  3. Teach sit as the greeting. A dog can't sit and jump at the same time. Ask for a sit before you say hello. Our page on positive reinforcement training explains the basics.
  4. Use small, soft treats. Read more in why we use food when training.
  5. Ask guests to help. Have visitors ignore your dog until it sits. Put your dog on a leash before you open the door, and keep treats by the door.
  6. Be consistent. If one person lets the dog jump, your dog learns that jumping still works. Everyone in the house must follow the same rules.

What Not to Do

Don't knee your dog, step on its back paws, grab its paws, or push it away. These old tricks can hurt your dog or make it afraid of people. Shock, prong, and choke collars are not needed to stop jumping. For more ideas, visit our dog training tips page.

A tired dog also jumps less, so give your dog daily walks and playtime.

When to Get Help

Call a trainer if your dog knocks people over, jumps on children or older adults, jumps with mouthing or growling, or does not improve after a few weeks. If your dog's behavior changes suddenly, check with your vet.
